Seeks Withdrawal of Sugarcane [Control] Order
C M Nitish Kumar on Wednesday submitted a memorandum to Prime Minister Manmohan Singh, reiterating the demand to accord the status of special category state to Bihar, Kumar made a similar demand when he met Planning Commission deputy chairman Montek Singh Ahluwalia.
Kumar also urged the P M to get the Presidential assent to an amendment to the Bihar Sugarcane [Purchase & supply] Regulations Act. 1981 and sought immediate withdrawal of the Centre’s Sugarcane [Control] Order.
The 3 year old order has banned production of ethanol by new sugar factories and permitted only the existing sugar factories to produce ethanol directly from sugar cane juice. Bihar has received a number of investment proposals for opening ethanol production units without producing sugar.
The C M reminded the P M as well as Ahluwalia that both the House of the state legislature had passed unanimous resolutions, demanding the status of special category state so that the state could attract investments and increase its growth rates. Good efforts by Nitish to bring Bihar in the developed state category as soon as possible.
