The first-ever visit by a World Bank [WB] president in Bihar brought cheers to the state as the Bank’s assistance worth $1 billion, or Rs 4,500 crore, is being seen as manna from heaven, especially for the victims of Kosi deluge of August 2008. Bank Boss Mr. Robert B Zoellick, chief minister Mr Nitish Kumar and Deputy CM Mr Sushil Kumar Modi watched WB’s country director Mr Roberto Zagha, Union finance ministry’s department of economic affairs jointly secretary Mr Venu Rajamony and states planning department principal secretary Mr Vijoy Prakash signing an agreement to the effect on Wednesday.

The funds would be released in a phased manner and the first installment would be worth $220 million or Rs 1k crore, meant for Bihar Kosi Flood Recovery Project. The state will share $39 million in this project worth $259 million.
